Family Learning - First Steps to Understand My Neurodivergent Child (ADHD, Autism) (Online)

Course intent

This course is designed for parents/carers who reside in ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø with children with special educational needs including autism, ADHD and all neuro-diverse conditions, also for those awaiting assessment or diagnosis

What will I learn?

This course is a FREE three-week online parenting course, parent/carers will develop an understanding of neurodiversity, including ADHD and Autism and the terms associated with neurodivergence and key features of different presentations. Parents will develop their language and skills for recording information and how to present this to professionals and become confident in approaching their child school for the right support.

  • To gain a greater understanding and answer the question, ‘Why does my child do that?
  • To have an understanding of neurodiversity behaviours in children.
  • To apply techniques for understanding a child’s profile and behaviour
  • Learners will know what they can do next and will begin to feel confident in advocating for their children

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for parents/carers who reside in ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø with children and teenagers who want to understand more about the neurodiversity and how they can support their child This is delivered online via Zoom

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need to:

  • Have your camera on
  • Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course.
  • Please attend all sessions
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera
  • A pen and paper
  • Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
  • Fill out the 'Getting to know you' form and fill out 'Tell us what you think' form
  • Contact us on family.learning@surreycc.gov.uk if you have any questions

What can I do when I finish the course?

At the end of this course, we will give you details of what you may wish to move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Adult Learning, a college or employment

Additional Information

This course does not qualify for an Education and Skills Funding Agency subsidy, so no concessions are available.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
