Course intent
On completion of Stage 3, this course is designed for confident and experienced painters looking to deepen their skills and explore more creative or abstract approaches to art. Through a combination of practice, discussion, and demonstration, you will build on your existing knowledge while being encouraged to push boundaries and experiment with new techniques. One-to-one support is available throughout to help you develop your unique artistic voice.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- Material Knowledge: Experiment with a variety of materials such as charcoal, pastel, ink, and more. Gain experience in choosing the right medium to express different aspects of the human form.
- Design Techniques: Research key art movements and artists style for inspiration. Learn how to analyse and adapt elements of other artists’ styles into your own work.
- Production Process: Develop individual skills in tone, colour and composition. Advance your skills in tone, colour mixing, layering, and composition. Develop a more expressive, personal approach to image-making.
- Craftsmanship: Focus on refining techniques and applying attention to detail in your finished work. Learn how to evaluate and improve your artistic outcomes.
- Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Stage 4 - This stage is for experienced learners looking to perfect their craft and develop a unique style. The focus is on mastering advanced techniques, creating polished and finished projects, and exploring personal expression.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
You need to bring:
- Drawing & painting materials you may already have purchased
- A pad of A3 cartridge paper
- Soft grade of pencils (4B or 6B)
- A soft rubber and/or a graphite stick
- Notebook and pen
Any materials and resources that you may need throughout the course will be discussed at induction.

What can I do when I finish the course?
In discussion with your tutor, you may like to continue the Drawing & Painting – Stage 4 course or enrol onto other Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
