Sewing for Home - Stage 1

Course intent

An introductory course designed for beginners who want to develop fundamental sewing skills with a focus on home-based projects. Learners will explore a variety of textiles and gain essential knowledge of materials used in home décor and soft furnishings.

What will I learn?

You will learn:

  • Material Knowledge: Learn how to select appropriate fabrics, threads, and tools for different types of sewing projects.
  • Design Techniques: Basic pattern drafting, measuring, and customization methods to personalize household items such as cushions, curtains, table linens, and storage accessories.
  • Production Process: Understand how to use different sewing machine functions and complete a project from concept to finished design.
  • Craftsmanship: How to practice your skills to achieve professional, polished results.
  • Studio Practice: Work in a safe environment, following best practices for tool safety and maintaining an organized and efficient workspace.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Stage 1 – This stage is for learners who are new to their chosen subject area. With the focus on introducing individuals to basic materials, tools, and techniques, and to inspire confidence in creative expression.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

For your first lesson you need to bring:

  • Fabric samples of different weights
  • Good quality sewing machine thread to practice with, such as Gütermann
  • Glass head pins
  • Cloth tape measure

And a basic sewing kit:

  • Good quality fabric cutting scissors
  • Needlework scissors
  • Snips/Seam ripper set
  • Heat erasable pens in different colours

Your tutor will discuss other materials in the first lesson, with tips on where to buy them.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto sewing courses or further Arts & Crafts courses at SAL.
